Reconstruction: John Willis Menard.

-Born to free French Creole parents in 1838 and received an education at Ohio central and Oberlin colleges.

-Dispatch by Lincoln in 1863 to British Honduras to scout out potential locations for resettlement of freed slaves after the war.

-In 1865 Menard returns to the US and settles in New Orleans where in 1868 he runs for a vacated Congressional seat and wins, becoming first black US rep.

-Caleb Hunt the loser the election contests the results and Menard addresses Congress in 1869 to defend his victory. Congress votes and ultimately deny both candidates the seat leaving it vacant.

-Birth of the KKK

-A group of confederate veterans convened to form a secret society called the "Ku Klux Klan", which became a paramilitary force bent on reversing the federal government's progressive Reconstruction Era activities, that involved creating policies that elevated the rights of African Americans. They employed violence in order to lash out and retaliate against the progressive policies, in order for them to sustain white racial superiority. They engaged in terrorist raids, employed intimidation, destroyed property, and committed assault and murder to achieve its aims and influence upcoming elections.


Civil Right Act of 1875

-On this date, the House passed the Civil Rights Act of 1875 by a vote of 162 to 99.

-Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, in 1870, the original bill outlawed racial discrimination in juries, schools, transportation, and public accommodations.

-First African American Congress Members.

-After the Civil War, Republicans in Congress tried to pass a series of laws and constitutional amendments to gain civil and political rights for African Americans.

-These people were considered radical because of their stance on trying to get rights for black people.
