This video talks about the progression of racism in the United States. The narrator Tim Wise talks about how racism has never really been fixed despite all the actions to try and bring equality to the United States. Tim Wise is an anti-racist educator who grew up in Nashville Tennessee. His parents where educated in a completely segregated environment and wanted Tim to attend a school with kids of color. Tim's parents sent him to a pre-school program at Tennessee State University, a historically black college. At a very young age Tim learned to respect black authority figures in a way that other white people would not understand. Going to a mostly back pre-school gave him a different perspective on how he sees the world. Throughout the video Tim talks about how all these laws that state the ending desegregation and the start of racial equality have never really promised equality at all.
With all the laws set in place that give African Americans equality there were still laws that showed segregation. For example the GI Bill was created to help veterans of WW II. It established hospitals, made low-interest mortgages available and granted stipends covering tuition and expenses for veterans attending college or trade schools FOR WHITE PEOPLE. There were still African Americans that fought in WWII who did not get these accommodations that white people did.
On November 4th 2008, Barack Obama was elected as the 44th president of the Untied States of America. He is the first African American candidate to ever be elected. This election have gave hope to the black community and even the white community. People thought that, "with a black president all racial inequality is over!" This was not the case. Even with Barak Obama in office, the median wealth of white families was 20 times greater than the median wealth of black families. Schools were also the same as 70% of students of color attended schools where the majority of students are black and brown. These schools were also 10 times more likely than majority white schools to have high level of student poverty. Even with a black president, racial inequality was still a very relevant thing.
